About the Role

Senior Applied Scientist role at Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group, focusing on designing and implementing state-of-the-art language and multimodal models to transform Windows experiences. Responsibilities include research, model training, and machine learning engineering from ideation to shipping.

Key Responsibilities

• Research focusing on foundation models - designing and training language and multimodal models
• Research focusing on environment interaction, policy specification, and human intent alignment
• Implementation: Train, distill, and finetune language and vision models in PyTorch, DeepSpeed, AzureML
• Machine learning engineering - Build pipelines to test designs, algorithms, and models
• Data science - Research and develop synthetic data generation strategies

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience OR equivalent
• 3+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program in academic or industry settings
• Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements including Microsoft Cloud Background Check
• Experience with Python and deep learning libraries

Nice to Have:

• 2+ years' experience training and/or finetuning large language models, model compression, distillation
• Experience in large language/multimodal model training, finetuning and distillation
• Demonstrated record of publications in top-tier conferences or journals
• Experience in creating reusable software libraries and packages
• Experience using dataset curation, data generation using prompting state of art LLMs and/or model alignment
