About the Role

Microsoft is hiring Senior and Principal Applied Scientists to advance AI research and integrate cutting-edge techniques into productivity products like M365 Copilot, Teams, and Dynamics 365. The role involves leading research projects, collaborating across teams, and publishing scientific work while contributing to real-world impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Defining, leading, and conducting research projects that advance state-of-the-art AI and benefit Microsoft's productivity products
• Shaping product direction by integrating rigorous scientific methods into the product lifecycle
• Collaborating with researchers, engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to bridge research and product
• Teaching and guiding colleagues without research backgrounds in state-of-the-art techniques and research best practices
• Sharing research through publications and communication to contribute to scientific community and product understanding

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

• Record of publications in top-tier scientific venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, CVPR)
• Doctorate in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or related field with 1+ years experience OR Master's with 3+ years OR Bachelor's with 4+ years OR equivalent experience
• Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements, including Microsoft Cloud Background Check
• Creative, self-driven, and comfortable defining a path through ambiguity towards high-level goals

Nice to Have:

• Proven real-world impact from research through shipped products, improved user experiences, or measurable benefits
• At least one internship or prior role at a leading technology company, startup, or related organization
• Optional: Cover letter, academic statement, and reference letters from established researchers
