About the Role
This is a PhD-level research internship focused on developing textile-based actuation systems for soft robotics. The intern will design textile actuators, explore control methods, and conduct materials research and mechanical characterization. The role involves hands-on experimentation, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and publishing scientific findings.Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute cutting-edge research on textile-based actuation systems
- Collaborate with researchers to prototype hardware and actuation controls
- Communicate research agenda and findings across disciplines
- Write and publish high-quality scientific articles
- Conduct materials research, textile architecture design, and mechanical characterization
Required Skills & Qualifications
Must Have:
- Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Textile Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field
- Understands state-of-the-art in textile-based actuation
- Experience with textile-based actuator prototyping (e.g., pneumatics, hydraulics, smart fibers, DEAs)
- Experience developing mechanical characterization techniques for actuators
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with soft robotic technologies and literature
- Expertise with 3D knitting and yarn structures
- Expertise in actuation control methods for soft robotics
- Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team
- Proven track record of grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications
- Intent to return to degree-program after internship
- Availability for minimum 16 consecutive week internship
