About the Role

The Applied AI Scientist II role at Microsoft focuses on developing and integrating cutting-edge AI technologies into products, with emphasis on multimodal LLMs, speech, and chat. Responsibilities include researching state-of-the-art models, fine-tuning foundation models, and translating research into production-ready solutions. The role requires collaboration across teams to ensure ethical, inclusive AI that drives real-world impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and implement state-of-the-art AI using foundation models, RAG, multi-agent architectures, and classical ML
• Fine-tune foundation models using domain-specific datasets and evaluate model behavior on relevance, bias, and quality
• Build rapid AI solution prototypes and contribute to production deployment with MLOps/AIOps support
• Translate research into production-ready solutions and measure impact through A/B testing and telemetry
• Apply responsible AI practices to identify and mitigate ethical risks including bias, privacy, and security concerns

Required Skills & Qualifications

Must Have:

• Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field AND 2+ years experience
• OR Master's Degree in related field AND 1+ year experience
• OR Doctorate in related field OR equivalent experience
• 1+ year experience developing and deploying live production systems
• Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud background check and security screenings

Nice to Have:

• Experience building RAGs and fine-tuning speech language models (Whisper, wav2vec2)
• Understanding of SLU, ASR, TTS, NLP, NLU domains
• Familiarity with modern LLMOps frameworks (LangChain, PromptFlow)
• Experience with MLOps workflows including CI/CD, monitoring, and retraining pipelines
• 1+ years experience publishing in peer-reviewed venues or filing patents
• Experience presenting at conferences or industry events
• Experience working with Generative AI models and ML stacks
